From the moment I first saw photos of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, I couldn’t shake the idea of waking up to giraffes outside my balcony. It felt completely different from anything else at Walt Disney World—more like a destination resort than just a place to sleep.
But I also kept seeing the same hesitation over and over again: “It’s too far from the parks.”
So I finally decided to see for myself.
I booked a value studio for a one-night stay—just Mark and me—and it completely changed how I view Disney resorts.
First Impressions: A Resort Like No Other
Walking into the lobby of Animal Kingdom Lodge doesn’t feel like stepping into a hotel—it feels like entering another world.

The soaring ceilings, massive wooden beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows immediately draw your eyes outward to the savanna. The architecture is inspired by traditional African design, with rich textures, warm tones, and intricate carvings everywhere you look. It’s the kind of space that makes you slow down without even realizing it.
What really stood out to me was how intentional everything felt. The lobby isn’t just beautiful—it’s filled with African art, artifacts, and storytelling. Every corner has something to discover, from hand-carved statues to woven textiles that make the entire space feel alive and authentic.
And then, just beyond the windows…animals.
The Room: Value Studio with a View
I went into this stay fully expecting a standard “value” experience—but what we got was anything but.
Even in a value studio, we had a view of the animals. Sitting on our balcony, we spotted zebras and giraffes wandering the savanna. That moment alone made the entire stay worth it.
The room itself was surprisingly spacious for two people and could easily accommodate a family of four. The layout worked well, especially with the sink area separated from the toilet and shower—something I always appreciate when getting ready.
The bathroom was on the smaller side, but for a short stay, it was completely manageable.
But honestly? The real “room upgrade” here is outside your balcony door.
Dinner on the Balcony: A Core Memory
One of my favorite moments of the trip was something incredibly simple.
We grabbed takeout from The Mara, picked up drinks from the pool bar, and headed back to our room.
I ordered the combination bowl, Mark went with the signature blend bacon cheddar burger, and of course—we couldn’t skip the zebra domes for dessert.

Everything was delicious, but the setting made it unforgettable. Sitting on our balcony, eating dinner while watching animals roam just feet away…that’s not something you can replicate anywhere else at Disney.
Transportation: Is It Really That Far?
This is probably the biggest concern people have—and honestly, I had it too.
We rented a car for this trip, and I was surprised at how quick everything felt. We were able to get to the parks in about 10 minutes or less, which completely changed my perspective.
Yes, Animal Kingdom Lodge is more tucked away compared to other resorts, but it didn’t feel inconvenient at all—especially with a car.
If you’re relying on Disney transportation, it’s bus-only, which is something to consider. But for us, the trade-off for the atmosphere and experience was 100% worth it.
Exploring the Resort: So Much to Do
Even though this was a quick stay, it was clear that this resort is meant to be experienced—not rushed.
There are animal viewing areas all throughout the property, and even walking down the hallways feels immersive. You’re constantly reminded that you’re somewhere special.
We loved watching the African woodcarvers at work and learning about the craftsmanship behind their pieces. There are also cultural activities offered throughout the day, including a bracelet-making experience that adds a really meaningful, hands-on element to your stay.
And one of my favorite simple pleasures? The rocking chairs overlooking the savanna. Sitting there, quietly watching the animals, completely changed the pace of our trip in the best way.

Pools & Recreation
We didn’t get to spend time at the pool on this visit, but it’s high on my list for next time—especially with the kids.
The pool area is expansive and beautifully themed, and I already know my kids are going to love Uwanja Camp, which is designed just for them to run, climb, and cool off.
This is definitely a resort where you want to build in downtime.

Why This Became My Favorite Resort
I didn’t expect to fall this hard for Animal Kingdom Lodge—but I did.
It’s relaxed. It’s immersive. It’s completely different from the typical Disney experience.
And while I never thought anything would top Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort for me, this might actually do it.
Not because it’s more convenient—but because it offers something deeper: a slower, more meaningful way to experience Disney.
What’s Next…
This one-night stay was enough to convince me.
We already have a two-bedroom villa booked for later this year—this time with the whole family as a surprise trip.
And I cannot wait to experience this resort again through their eyes.
Stay tuned…because that review is definitely coming next.
